With z15, IBM strengthens data protection


After the introduction of end-to-end AES encryption on its z14 mainframe, IBM further enhances data protection with the newly announced z15. The newest member of the Z family can execute up to 1 trillion transactions per day and deploy up to 2.4 million Linux containers in a single system.

Announced today, the system is focused on handling critical hybrid cloud workloads. Still in  1st place in patent filingsWorldwide, IBM is proud to implement more than 3,000 patents, obtained or in progress, in this z15, the result of over 4 years of development. Among the new features, the American manufacturer immediately emphasizes its instant recovery function - Recovery Boost - much faster than previous models, to limit the impact of downtime, planned or not. With z14 , IBM introduced end-to-end AES encryption on all data managed on the mainframe. On the z15, the provider further strengthens the data protection features, in a global context where weekly intrusions into corporate systems result in the theft of personal or sensitive information.


To mitigate the impact of potential compromises when data needs to be transferred to other environments, the Data Privacy Passports solution, available on the z15 and LinuxONE III platforms, helps prevent unauthorized access, revoke access to data and keep it in check even when it has left the system. Through Trusted Data Objects, integrated with Data Privacy Passports, the protection remains focused on the data. The goal is to extend protection in distributed and hybrid environments, including storing data in public clouds or shared with third parties. IBM highlights the risk of sharing sensitive data in the context of RGPD compliance. "Often, our customers need to access data and analytics in a fraction of a second, with the ability to control the confidentiality of this data at a granular level," said Ross Mauri, managing director of IBM Z in a statement.his site .

Up to 190 configurable cores

In the spring of 2018, IBM announced with  ZR1a more compact version of its z14 delivered less than a year earlier, designed to fit in a standard 19-inch rack. The z15 also fits into 19-inch racks, allowing it to easily coexist with other data center systems. It is offered in configurations from 1 to 4 chassis. Compared to z14, the space required on the ground is halved. An optional appliance offered with the z15 adds management console functions within the rack, eliminating the need for a separate console. The z15 offers 12% of hearts and 25% more memory compared to z14. The system is equipped with an IBM 12 cores chip etched in 14 nm in silicon on insulator technology and clocked at 5.2 Ghz (the z14 is based on a 10-core chip at 5.2 GHz). With the z15 T01 model, IBM provides up to 190 configurable cores. The T01 is available in five versions: Max34, Max71, Max108, Max145 and Max190. Each system can have 40 TB of independent redundant memory (RAIM). In the  technical sheet of z15, big blue says that its virtual flash memory (VFM) now houses in this redundant memory, providing high access performance. Up to 6 TB of granular options are available with this VFM. Among the new features of the z15, file compression capabilities are enhanced by a dedicated co-processor, the Integrated Accelerator for zEDC (zEnterprise Data Compress), which replaces the zEDC adapter of previous models and extends compression to more data. applications.

Docker Linux on Z Workloads

For application development on z15, DevOps for IBM Z provides a set of tools to maintain and modernize applications on Z mainframes and hybrid cloud platforms. Through Zowe , the open source framework for z / OS, integration is possible with various third-party tools such as Git, Jira, Jenkins and SonarQube. IBM compilers can leverage the z15 architecture for cross-platform integration using Java, Swift, or Node.JS.

Among the important points, IBM still highlights the possibility of z / OS and Linux on Z workloads. In the area of ​​containerized applications, z / OS Container Extensions (zCX) allows developers to build and deploy on zOS Docker workloads Linux on Z. IBM expects to reduce the obstacles to develop on the Z platform while allowing workloads to inherit the characteristics of the platform: high availability, disaster recovery, scaling, Workload management and integration with z / OS security. Pricing inspired by cloud consumption

Last May, along with the inclusion of Docker images on his Z family, IBM announced its intention to change its pricing to adapt to the consumption mode of the cloud . This Tailored Fit Pricing model will also apply to the z15. For IBM, it has all the features to help businesses continue their digital transformation to the cloud by leveraging a high availability and highly secure platform. The manufacturer recalls that they have so far transferred a fifth of their applications in the cloud and feels well placed to help them on the remaining 4 / 5ths .
